Take A Stand!

I am really enjoying being a part of the blogging world.  I love how I can express feelings I have, share ideas, and hopefully maybe inspire those who read it.  Today I want to blog about a topic that I feel very strongly towards: Bullying.

I was very fortunate growing up to have never really been bullied.  I absolutely loved high school and had a great childhood.  I was one of the lucky ones.  Unfortunately, not every child has the same experience.  Bullying seems to be happening more and more.  Now with cell phones and social networking sites, bullying seems to be getting worse.  Kids will say hurtful things online that they would never say in person.  Cyber bullying is ruining children's lives.

Bullies don't understand that what they say and do will affect that child for the rest of their lives.  I remember seeing a video where every time the girl was bullied, a scar would form.  By the end of the short clip, she was scarred from head to toe.  I wonder if a bully would stop if they could see the scars.  But just because you can't see them, doesn't mean they are not there.  These scars will stay with victims of bullying throughout their lives.  They are permanent and affect a child/adult's self-esteem.

When a child is bullied, that bully is taking away their childhood little by little.  Victims of bullying fall behind in school because they are afraid to be there or to be noticed.

Being a teacher, I see bullying happen every day in the schools and it needs to stop.  Yes there is education out there to teach children about the effects of bullying but it doesn't seem to be enough.  I truly believe that bullying awareness needs to exist in every classroom, every day.  Bullying awareness and prevention should be a part of the school's curriculum and there needs to be harsher consequences.

Children are innocent and they should feel safe going to school or playing on the internet.  They should be allowed to be themselves without judgment.

This is a video that myself and two fellow classmates worked on for a Psychology assignment.  I feel like I could blog about this topic for hours.  But this short video sums it up perfectly.

Smile :)

Do you ever wake up and have the feeling that today is just not your day?  That is exactly how I felt this morning.  I guess you can say I woke up on the wrong side of the bed.  Jeffrey and I had planned to get a lot accomplished today but obstacles continued to get in our way.  By the time we arrived home, nothing had been done.  I was grumpy and just wanted to crawl back into bed and wait for tomorrow to come.

I'm thinking about it now and I realize how silly I sound.  Just because things didn't go my way doesn't give me a reason to be mad at the world.  Instead I should be thankful.  Thankful that I have an incredible family who are all healthy, a beautiful house to come home to, friends that would take the shirt off their back if I needed it, a fridge full of food, etc.  There are so many people in this world that don't have the luxuries I get to experience on a daily basis. People without a home, food, even clean water.

While I was in my "mood" today, my husband told me to smile.  He pulled up a picture of a young child who lives in poverty.  This child was smiling.  Although he didn't have enough food to eat, clean water to drink, or even proper shelter, he was happy.

We live our lives complaining about bills, taxes, big lineups and gas prices when we should really be thankful for all these things.  If we are paying bills, that means we have a house to live in.  If we are buying gas, it means we have a car to drive.  If we are paying taxes, it means we have a job.  We are lucky to have all these things and we should never take them for granted.

So next time you are having a bad day, look at this picture and try to see the positive in the situation.  I bet you will see how lucky you are!  Your day will not seem as bad as you think.

Once upon a Halloween...

This was a story I wrote while practice teaching in a grade 5/6 class.   Although the story is fiction, it is based on a true story that my brother had experience when he was a teenager.  The grade 5/6 class loved it.  I hope in the spirit of Halloween, you enjoy the story as much as they did. :)

The Haunted House
By. Whitney Averill

In a small town called Petrolia, there lived a boy named Aaron.  Aaron had just moved to this small town and didn’t know many people so he spent a lot of time on his own.   One day, while reading his book in the park, another young boy named Mark sat beside him and said hello.  Aaron and Mark hit it off almost instantly and spent the remainder of the summer hanging out at the park.  Aaron had invited Mark over to his house many times but Mark had never invited Aaron to his.  He always came up with excuses on why Aaron couldn’t come over.

Then one day Aaron’s mom decided to call Mark’s parents and ask if they could watch Aaron for the weekend.  Aaron’s parents needed to go away for business and didn’t want to drag him and his sister along with them.  Mark’s parents were happy to have them stay.  Mark, on the other hand, was not happy at all.

That Friday, Aaron along with his sister, were dropped off at Mark’s house.  He was so excited when he pulled up to a big, old country home on a huge farm.  Aaron thought, “This is going to be THE BEST weekend ever!”

Mark greeted Aaron and his sister and brought them inside.  He showed Aaron’s sister Zoe the spare room where she would be sleeping.  He then brought Aaron to the basement where the pullout couch was made into a bed with blankets and pillows neatly piled on top.

Aaron’s excitement quickly faded when he sensed his friend’s lack of enthusiasm.  He couldn’t understand why Mark was so upset with him staying the weekend.  After they had finished up dinner, Mark took Aaron downstairs and apologized for acting so strange.  He told Aaron that the reason he had never invited him over was because his house was haunted.  Aaron laughed out loud and couldn’t believe Mark actually believed in ghosts.

Mark stormed upstairs and on his way up yelled, “You just wait and see!”

That night Aaron had trouble sleeping.  He kept thinking he was hearing things upstairs but convinced himself that he was just imagining it because of what Mark had told him.  After hours of tossing and turning, Aaron finally fell asleep.

The morning came and Aaron was awoken to the sounds and smells of breakfast being made and friendly chatter at the breakfast table.  He hurried to get dressed and ran upstairs so he wouldn’t miss out on a delicious country style breakfast.  As he got up the stairs and into the kitchen, no one was there.  The kitchen was neat and tidy and looked exactly the same as it had when he went to bed.  There was no evidence that someone had been cooking breakfast or sitting at the table socializing.  Aaron was confused.  He convinced himself that he must have been dreaming.

He decided not to tell Mark.  Instead he just went about the day as if nothing had happened.  That night Aaron was getting ready for bed when his sister started SCREAMING at the top of her lungs.  He ran up the stairs and into her room to see what was going on.  Zoe had the covers over her head and was trembling fiercely.

Aaron could not calm her down.  She just kept repeating the word brush.  “The bbrruush, the brush, the brush!”   Mark and his mother ran into the room.  Once Zoe had calmed down enough to speak she told them what had happened.

As Zoe was getting ready for bed, she took a brush out of her bag and brushed her hair.  After she had finished, she placed the brush back into the bag and zipped it up.  She then turned off the lights and climbed into bed.  She was just about to fall asleep when she felt a tug at the back of her head.  When she turned around, her brush fell to the floor and sitting in the corner was a ghost staring at her.  The ghost was a beautiful women dressed in an old fashion nightgown.  She had tears running down her face and she looked as though she was screaming but no sounds could be heard.

Mark’s mother brought Aaron, Zoe and Mark down to the kitchen and made them each a cup of hot chocolate.  She explained to Aaron and Zoe that the house was indeed haunted.  Back in the 1800’s a man and his wife had passed away in a fire.  The house was repaired but the spirits of the young couple never left.  The spirits usually lived peacefully, but when they sense the unfamiliar they sometimes reappear.

Aaron couldn’t believe that ghosts actually existed and his best friend had two living with him.  Although Aaron and Mark remained best friends, Aaron decided that would be the one and only time he would stay the night at Mark’s house.

HAPPILY EVER AFTER <3

I met my husband almost 5 years ago.  I was working at Boston Pizza as a bartender and he was one of our many regulars.  He always ordered the same thing, Penne Alfredo with chicken breast and a pepsi. :)   One day he asked if I would be interested in playing for his baseball team.  He was definitely a flirt and a crush formed quickly.  After a few weeks we were spending more and more time together until we were basically inseparable.

November 14, 2009.  This was the day Jeffrey proposed.  It was one of the hottest days of the year which was not normal for the middle of November.  This was also Jeffrey's birthday.  He asked me to play baseball in Brigden with him and his friends.  I was tired and not really feeling it but decided to go anyways.  I showed up at the diamond and not one person was there.  Suddenly my cell phone rang and it was Jeffrey telling me to go to 1st base.  I did as I was told and found a note.  The note lead me to second base, then to third and finally home... at home base, Jeffrey appeared on one knee and asked me to marry him.  :)  I laughed and of course said YES!

Picture taken at my sister's house right after he proposed!  I was dressed to play baseball.. haha!

September 4, 2010.  This was the day I married my best friend.  I wasn't big on traditional weddings and I wanted our day to be about the things we loved.  So Jeffrey and I decided to do just that.  We got married on a small baseball diamond at his parents place.  It was perfect considering our history we have with baseball ;)

The day started a little rough.  Our ceremony was outdoors with a white tent reception.  Not the best scenario for cold and windy weather.  But everything turned out perfect.  The clouds were thick that day but as our ceremony rolled on, the clouds seemed to part and the sun shone through just as we said "I do!"  I decided to give pashmina scarves as one of our wedding favours and it really came in handy.  The guests absolutely LOVED the scarves and most wore them all night due to the cooler weather.  We also decided to set up a fire pit with haystacks for seating and this ended up being a big hit later in the night.

For our food, we decided to do appetizers with bowls of pad thai as well.  Thai food has always been a favourite of mine so our caters were great to find a way to incorporate it.  We also decided to put wine and beer in buckets on all the tables.  Wine on the tables is something everyone does but I know many people (especially guys) who don't really care for wine.  So when the bar closes they sit for hours without a drink.  By putting the buckets of beer on the tables, I was able to accommodate all my guests.

Because our wedding was on my husbands parents property, we wanted to reduce the waste as much as possible.  So I decided to give each guest a disposable cup with their name on it.  The guests were informed that as long as they kept their cups, they could drink for free all night.  If they lost the cup, they would have to pay $2 for a new cup.  This method worked AMAZING!!  We saved a lot of cleanup in the morning!

I could keep writing about my dream day but pictures tell the story a million times better.  So here you go... Pictures from the BEST day of my life!

Thanksgiving Country Style!

This year I decided to host my very first Thanksgiving dinner. Jeffrey and I have been living in our little farm house for about 6 months now. We have hosted numerous dinner parties but thought it would be fun to have a BIG Thanksgiving dinner with 25 of our closest friends. Now cooking and entertaining for 25 people is A LOT of work. So we decided to make the party a pot luck. I took the day off work and made the turkey, stuffing, and a stuffing casserole. Jeffrey took the day off work to prepare the outside.

I really wanted to have everyone sitting at one long table but inside there just wasn't room for that. So during the week Jeffrey and I took our run down barn and turned it into a beautiful venue. We cleaned it all out and laid a crap load of fresh gravel. We then decided to string white lights across the beams and decorate using haystacks. We set up folding chairs and tables and made sure there was enough seating for 25. We then set up a fire pit and haystacks outside the barn so if it got a little chilly at night, we could all sit around the fire.

The weather ended up being AMAZING!! 28 degrees Celsius which is above average for the month of October. The weather, the food and the company was perfect. Our guests arrived around 7pm and were blown away by all the work Jeffrey and I put into our first Thanksgiving Feast.

We called this night the Feast at the Farm and everyone agreed that it should be a new tradition. So every Friday of Thanksgiving weekend, Jeffrey and I will be hosting a Feast at the Farm!
